4 Tennis players who became Grand Slam champions in Big 3 Era

Since 2006, the Big 3 players have truly dominated the ATP tennis tour. They have won all but 8 Grand Slam titles in the last 15 years. The 3 legends collectively have 56 slams in their tally with Federer leading at 20, Nadal a close second at 19 and Djokovic next in the list with 17 majors. Only 4 other players have managed to become Grand Slam champions in this period of this great tennis triumvirate. 

Andy Murray

The Brit has been able to stand closest to the Big 3 in the last 15 years. Murray is the only player to have become World Number 1 except the Big 3 since 2005 years. He has also won 3 Grand Slams in his career so far. Murray became a Grand Slam Champion first time in the 2012 US Open. He beat the then World Number 1 Novak Djokovic in the final. The match was a 5 set titanic clash. 

Success again followed in 2013 at his home turf in the lawns of Wimbledon.  Murray defeated Novak Djokovic again, this time in 3 straight sets. He became the first British male player in many decades to win the Wimbledon title. The former world number 1 repeated his Wimbledon heroics in 2016. This time he faced Canada’s Milos Raonic in the final. Andy Murray has thus emerged as a 3 time Grand Slam champion in the famous Big 3 era of tennis. 

Stan Wawrinka

The Swiss power-hitter has also been a 3 time Grand Slam champion so far in his career. Stan’s 3 Grand Slams have come on 3 different tournaments. He, however, has beaten a Big 3 member in all 3 finals.  The former world number 3 won his 1st Grand Slam title in 2014 Australian Open. He upset the then world number 1 Rafael Nadal in the final match. 

In the 2015 French Open Wawrinka pulled another massive upset against Novak Djokovic. He won the match in 4 sets.  Another victory came in in the 2016 US Open when stan displayed his raw hitting power against Djokovic in the final. Wawrinka thus lifted another major trophy to become a 3 time Grand Slam Champion.  

Marin Cilic

The Croat has been one of the surprise Grand Slam Champions of the last decade. He won the 2014 US Open beating Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the final. Cilic had earlier defeated Roger Federer in the semi-final. He then beat the Japanese rival in 3 straight sets to lift his first and only Grand Slam trophy. The Croatian star reached 2 more Slam finals in the 2017 Wimbledon and 2018 Australian Open. He was however beaten on both occasions by Federer. 

Juan Martin Del Potro

The Argentine became a Grand Slam champion in the US Open 2009. He was a mere 21 years old then. Del Potro beat the 5-time defending champion Roger Federer in the final. In the semis that year he had defeated Rafael Nadal. The former world number 3 would have won more Grand Slams in his career. However frequent injury issues derailed his journey. Del Potro again reached the US Open final in 2019. This time however he finished at the losing end to Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
