A tennis court is a rectangular area where the players practice or play matches. The typical courts are 78 feet long with the width of 27 feet for the singles matches and 36 feet for the doubles matches. We introduce you to different types of tennis courts, their specifics and the important tournaments like Grand Slams, ATP Masters 1000s, and WTA Premier Events played on these courts.

HARD TENNIS COURTS

Most of the tennis is played on these court surfaces. The hard tennis courts may be slow or fast in nature. Out of the four Grand Slam tournaments two are played on the tennis courts with a hard surface. These are the Australian Open and the United States Open. While the US Open has a slower court surface, the Australian Open has faster hard courts. The hardcourt tennis is played both indoors and outdoors.

Also, six of the nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments are played on hard tennis court surfaces. These courts also host the Nitto ATP finals as well the WTA season finale along with most premier WTA tournaments. Thus hard courts are the most widely used tennis surface. Novak Djokovic is currently known as the best hard court player having won 8 Australian Open and 3 US Open slams.

Clay courts are the slowest and most challenging of all tennis courts to play on. The slow nature of clay means that your defense should be excellently strong. The ball travels through lesser speed on these tennis courts. Thus it becomes very difficult to hit outright winners. Clay is thus regarded by most players as the most physically demanding and mentally taxing surface to play on.

The French Open or Roland Garros is the most important and well-known clay-court tournament in the world. It is played in the idyllic city of Paris on court Philippe Chatrier. Three ATP Masters tournaments which include Monte Carlo, Madrid Open and Rome Masters are also played on clay. The WTA also holds many of its premier tournaments on the red dirt.  Rafael Nadal is regarded as the greatest clay-court player in tennis history. The Spaniard has won 12 French Open titles so far along with 26 clay court masters titles.

Roger Federer and Pete Sampras are known to be the best Grass Court male tennis players in history. In the women’s section, Martina Navratilova who won nine Wimbledon titles is highly admired for her grass-court game.

A few years ago many tennis tournaments were played on carpet courts also. They were however abandoned as many players complained of frequent injuries while playing on the carpet surface.
